Gargoyles Survey: What Would YOU Choose?

Survey

last update: March 7/00

I posted the following survey to the Gargoyles mailing list:

I'd like to run a little survey *off list*. I'm a little curious what the listmembers would pick.
Imagine yourself in the shoes of the Pack during Upgrade. What choice would you have made? Would you have chosen...

a)      the battlesuit (Dingo, Xanatos)? If so, add a few details on what features you'd have taken. Anything special about its appearance? Would you have it be able to fly, swim, burrow or something else? Please try and keep it reasonable, there is a limited volume for a suit. :)

b)      the cyberware (Jackel, Hyena)? If so, what'd be special about it? What body parts would you be willing to trade in and how would these be special? Would you 'go all the way' and be just a brain inside a jar with a robot body?

c)      genetic manipulation (Wolf, the mutates)? If so, what animal, or insect or plant for that matter, would you have chosen and why? Would you have gone for the bat wings as well?

d)      to go gargoyle (a la Mirror)? Oh, I know the Pack didn't have this choice, but I'll include it to see how people here would choose. Now this means full time gargoyle, stone during the day and alive at night. No 50/50 deal like Demona. If you choose this, include a little on the appearance (colour, horns?, wing shape, etc...)

or e)      something else? Would you take something else, not listed in the above, but reasonable within the Gargoyles universe. Please no Children of Oberon or sorcerors though, since that's doesn't fit the point of the survey.

Please don't go overboard in your reply, a paragraph or two at the most. Be sure to include *why you* would take that selection. Oh, and no mixing and matching. I don't want to see any cybernetic garg-mutates in battlesuits.

To cast your vote, email ME!

To join the Gargoyles mailing list, send mail HERE!
with "subscribe gargoyles" (without quotes) in the -body- of the message.

I'd have chosen to be a tiger mutate. I'd take feathered wings over the bat wings, given a choice. The lightning would be a bonus, but not required. But body would have to follow species. If I did not get the body to go along with it (and were left with my tall, gangly form instead), I'd choose a serval instead. Long legged, agile and great jumpers. Those big, round ears are a nice bonus too. :)

I'd take this because I've always been a cat person at heart. As well, felines are powerful predators. Lithe, swift, powerful, graceful and beautiful.

I would DEFINITELY choose option a (the battle suit). It'd be fairly simple and mostly defensive: sculped like an angel and painted in a similar fasion, able to fly. As bulletproof as possible, armed fairly lightly with an enhanced sword (probably in a method similar to the quarryhammers). If possible with regard to space/weight, it'd have non-lethal defensive weapons as well (perhaps smoke or tear gas grenades).

There are several reasons I'd chose this over any of the others.

      1) Tactical reasons. Gargoyles, cyborgs, and mutates are tough, but they're not *that* tough. Certainly not bulletproof. Also: gargs and mutates can't actually fly, as in VTL. Finally, a battle suit, unlike changes to one's body, is relatively painless, modifiable, and at least potentally field-reprable.

      2) Removable. All of the modifications except for this one are almost certainly permanent, and definitely extremely difficult to reverse, if possible. With this, one minute you're fighting evil with the best of 'em, the next you're going off to class.

      3) Finally, I've always felt that it is not a good idea to alter one's body when alternatives are available. If a suit is more effective, is more easily removable, and doesn't affect one's body, why go with something else?

Sorry, I hope this wasn't too long!

Tony, Tony,
What a survey! I would choose (a), the battle suit, like Mr. X's! (Like, Dingo, I don't exactly wanna be a dog, or loose any parts...) *Holds knees together* BTW, what ya doing with the replies?

>d) to go gargoyle

Bingo. :) Well, my reasoning is this: for all of time, humans have wanted a style of "flight." Why not the next best thing? Besides, being able to do stuff any normal person wouldn't would make it all the more sweeter. Gotta have that ol' stone sleep, too.

Well, appearances would be having a green body, ala Lex, with a shock of yellow hair, and the standard loincloth (modesty does not become me(. Wings like Brooklyn, and ears to match, being a male gargoyle would be a dream come true. *sigh* Seen a magician lately? ;)

A) The battlesuit. I'm not about to trade in parts of my body or turn myself into some kind of mutate. I'd still like to get by in normal society just fine, thank you.

What would my battlesuit look like? Styled after a panther in general form, but with a "mane" of sorts -- like the shape of the Steel Clan robot heads -- resembling my own hair. Emphasis would be on speed and defense, in that order, with arms being kept to something relatively lightweight. And I'd go for a sleek black color scheme with blue highlights. Flight? No, but enhanced jumping would be good. And it should be air- and watertight so that it could function underwater with no problems. Oh, and the design would include a prehensile tail; not sure how'd I'd work it, but it would fit the design of the suit.

Okeeey! I can live with this.

>a) the battlesuit (Dingo, Xanatos)?
um... nope. BTW where does Xanatos put his arms? That laser cannon akes up all the room in the e-frame's forearm.

>b) the cyberware (Jackel, Hyena)?
uh uh. I _like_ my body parts! ;)

>c) genetic manipulation (Wolf, the mutates)?
Definitely not. Eel effect would be cool though.

>or d) to go gargoyle (a la Mirror)?
_very_ tempting, but no thanks. Too vulnerable.

>e) something else?
Ah. Personally, I'd like to bond with the Matrix. My consciousness and body controlling an extremely malleable(sp) weapon/tool? Cool. Imagine it: Nanotech healing, manipulation of any object, power just below that of the fey! Send a little glob of the Matrix to do a little recon/espionage work. Bwahahahahahahahaha! Sorry

Cheers!

I'd choose to be a gargoyle. It would be neat to have a set of wings to glide upon. I like Demona or Angela's coloring, but Angela's black hair . . . or brown, just like I have now. I'd be a full-time gargoyle. I'd have either Demona, Brooklyn, Angela or Desdemona's wing shape--probably Desdemona's. Horns . . . either yes or now . . . if so, then I'd like Gabriel's horns, but horns don't matter. :-)

This one. But only if they could give me a shapely bod to go with it. No point in being a fat dumpy mutate. I'd want to be a slinky, emerald-eyed leopardess. Think I'd opt for feathered wings instead of bat ones, if I could. And then I'd seduce Griff (since Goliath's taken).

My skin colour woulld be a light grey mist, it'll go good with my eyes. A traviler for I will not ever really have a home. Having Broadway's horns .

Hidey-ho, fellow Canadian! Hmmm... Now is this what would I have picked, had I been a Pack member, or what would I (Aurora Minui) have picked, given the choices?

Well, if I were a pack-member, d) would be right out... Like I can _really_ trust Jackal, Hyena and Wolf not to smash me while I was sleeping... hey that would make a neat movie title.. :) b) would be impractical for airplane travel (metal detectors going off everywhere!) and c) would leave me with a _heck_ of a time finding a good doctor... er, veterinarian... er, never mind... plus, again, I'd live in constant fear that one of the other pack members would trank me up, and sell me to the nearest sideshow or medical research facility... i suppose a) would be the best choice for a pack member; it's very portable, quite durable, and can be upgraded at no inconvenience! I'd add flight capability (so's I'm on par with the other pack-ers), underwater capability (so's I can toss the suit in the washing machine... er, I mean, so's I can chase my enemies underwater), and just in case I'd keep the microscopic vision and telescopic vision. Possibly a gas mask and infra-red vision in the helmet part.

If I were me, and Xanatos just showed up on my doorstep ("Hi, you don't know me, but I'm, uh, conducting market researching on improvements to humanity. If you'll just fill out the following survey..") then I'd choose e), and opt for a Demona deal. That way, I'd be safe at night and during the day... During the day I could sleep, go to UBC, whatever, and during the night I could, well, do whatever I like! And since I live in Vancouver, City of the Weird, people would just assume I was an extra in an X-files shoot, and not notice me :)

Hope that helped!

In a message dated 97-12-03 16:03:52 EST, you write:

I would definitely go for the genetic manipulation, simply because of that darned stone-during-the-day thing. I find it far too much of a burden. My appearance would be calibrated, and come out looking much like a gargoyle: fairly tall for a female, with two small, curved horns protruding from my brow. My skin would be black, as would the outside of my wings. The underside of the wings would be a deep, dark, almost-black red. My legs would morph to allow me to walk on the balls of my feet more comfortably, and tailor-made raptor-claws would replace my middle toes. My legs would strengthen exponentially, allowing me to leap and kick with great force. I'd have knee- and elbow-spurs, and a slender tail. My wings would be split in the fashion of Goliath, Broadway, etc., with three "fingers" supporting the webbing. They would be stronger than gargoyle wings, allowing me to take off into flight from the ground, aided by a leap. At the first joint, I'd have three prehensile 'fingers', like Brooklyn's "hands". My eyes would be paler, the iris fading away. When angry, the genetic mutation would imitate the glowing, but it would be a loud chartreuse. My teeth would sharpen to fangs, and my jaw muscles would strengthen. My ears would be more pointed, sweeping back into very long black hair. I would be more lithe, having more elongated limbs than a genuine gargoyle, than Angela, and just a bit more muscled than Demona. No bodybuilder, to be sure, but steroids would doubtlessly be involved in the precess so that my current form could adapt to the sudden, abrupt physical changes. Granted, there would be a considerable amount of pain involved in the transformation, but I would gladly suffer for the chance to fly.

I am sincerely serious about this. Given the chance, I would gladly abandon my current status in society, not because I am unhappy, but because I would relish the freedom and strength the form would grant me. Perhaps I would take up residence in some small town, or stay in my own, and Protect. Or I would reclude to the deep forest somewhere north of here and live by my own means. Maybe I'd even meet up with others who chose a similar path...

Well, I would have picked a combo of the two: Genetic Manipulation and "Other." In this I mean, I wouldn't be genetically mutated to look like a wolf or other animal, but instead would be a David Duchavny lookalike. ;D

Second choice would be the cyber-ware, and yeah, I'd probably go all the way, in being just a brain in a metal can.

a) Battlesuits: Well, if you want to be unobtrusive, you can always remove a battlesuit...of coures, you can be caught without it.

b) Cybernetics: Nah. No telling what they might have to remove :-0

c) Genetic manipulation: Some of the more esoteric anumals like, say Porcupine or Komodo Dragon might be useful, but no fur. I hate fleas!

d) Gargoyle: I may be committing blasphemy, but no. I'd hate turning to stone during the day!

e) Something else: Hmmm...The mergence of two consciousnesses has a hell of a tactical appeal; twice the brainpower AND the instincts. An implanted AI computer that ties in to your nervous system, or two beings being able to fuse into one sounds way cool (Think about it...for someone as old as Demona, she can be awfully stupid. Wouldn't she be more dangerous if she had a second brain that would say "Uhhmmm...maybe you should rethink that!")

I would have gone for the siut because like Dingo I like my body the way it is, it would be amphibious as well as the capacity for flight. Technological armament would be a pair particle beams, small high intenisty flame thrower, EMP generator, and collaspeable sheild and sword. Design of suit would have the apperance of stream lined medieval armor, rough appearance of Arthur's armor. Finnally I would add magical enhancements if they were available to enhance speed, strength, durability, maybe even some attack spells like firebalss lightning etc.

Marlos: Hmmm... looks like we've got someone here who missed that bit about mixing and matching and that you can't have a battlesuit do everything.

Ok, so the survey's over, AND I'm not on the List. Who cares? You asked...

I would definitely not pick A. I already have experienced far too many years in this body, I'd like to try another. That pretty much kills B as well, leaving genetic manipulation, going gargoyle, or getting creative. I'll eliminate E, getting creative, since the other two are good enough.

So, gargoyle or mutate? I'm afraid I gotta say mutate. Think about it: The gargoyles have two advantages over the mutates: they're stronger, and their stone sleep heals them pretty nicely. The mutates also have two advantages over gargoyles: the electric bolts (handy against enemy gargoyles, too, since they seem vulnerable to electricity -- HOW many times has a gargolye been KO'd by a couple volts?), and they don't go into stone sleep. They probably have regular sleep, but at least they can wake up if attacked; the gargoyles can't. Overall, I think the mutates have a better deal. Being able to shoot enemies from a distance is safer than having to grapple with them, and the entire stone sleep thing I'd just avoid if I could.

As for looks, I'd look kind of like a cross between a coyote and a dragon: anthropomorphic coyote head, arms and body, and draconic wings, tail and feet, with draconic horns on the head as well.

Xodiac the Dragote

Marlos: Well, dragon DNA is a little hard to come by. You might be on the waiting list for a while. :)

How about Nanite Infusion? Y'know, having a whole bunch of tiny robots in your system could be mighty useful. THink about it. If you're ever injured, the nanites repair is almost instantlly. Even if you lost a limb, they'd just use any convinient matter to rebuild it. It'd enhance your phyisical skills to unbelieveable levels, and it can re-arrange the atoms in your body into any convininet form.
So, you'd look like a totally normal person, except when you need to be something else. Such as you arm becomeing a gun, and reverting to normal when you're done. Or maybe making your skin as strong as titanium to repel bullets.
And I know this is stepping into the Mix-and-match area, but leaving this out would be missing the obvious. YOur genetic code is a bunch of molecules, right? Well, nanites can rearrange things at the molecular level, so theoretically, they could make your genetic code whatever you wanted for however long you wanted, then return it to normal when done.
The reason I picked this is because it has incredible possibilities, and very few drawbacks. When not in use, you seem totally normal, and you can have nearlly any ability when it is in use.
As for classification, is this b or e? I'll leave the decision up to you.

I think I'd like to have Dingo's battle armor. Dingo was always the one who wouldn't do anything to himself permanatly. The rest of the Pack, well, they aren't even human anymore. How does there bodies act to viruses and stomach bags and such? Terminal illnesses might kill Jackel, Hyena or Wolf faster than a normal person. Well, just my thoughts cause i'm really bored.

What would I look like? Well, a tigermorph, rusty-orange-red fur on most of my body, jet black stripes, creamy accent/belly/nose fur. Blue breeches, belted in gold. Gold and ruby medallion around my neck bearing the sign of fire. Feathered wings. Brown tunic, various symbols embroidered on the sleeve. A shock of black hair, rises when I'm upset/angry/highly emotional. Hazel eyes. Slightly pointed ears. Reasons? Well, I believe I would choose the SUIT... things it would have? let's see...
Well, I have always wanted a rocketbelt, but this suit is from Nokarr... so this one has those cool light blue looking like material (the kind that the engines of the spaceships in star trek) but in strips on the back, going down, that can make the suit anti-gravity... (two big strips) therefore, moving to anywhere I want, when I want it...
Another thing... the helmet, would have to have special glass, to look through, that has computer indications, and messages, and such in it that I could enhance my vision, and stuff like that.. now... this helmet, since it is alien technology, is controlled by a mechanism inside the helmet that reads my mind, and from what I want, it controls the suit entirely by my thoughts... so that would be cool...
the next thing... the material would be really light, and can repair itself using nano-technology, and it is projectile proof... and it would enhance strength up to %150...
Removable? well this suit would be similar to Nokarr's... hmm... is it proper attire for just about anything? I dont know... let's see... maybe it could liquidify like how venom, in spider-man, could, and compact into a back pack.. the metal parts of the suit, become it.... and then you could just take it off...
Biological... it would keep your skin fresh during the time of use... everyone knows that Nokarr must have had one of those, to be wearing that thing for eons...
And the suit has a built in phone dialer system that saves on collect calls up to %144!!! just kidding...
and if someone has a suit like this, they wont NEED the other options! well anyhow.. sorry to bother you all... but you just read my answer...

Ooooh goody! Survey! I'd choose D. It sure would be an exciting lifestyle. I'd like to think that I'd be light brown with dark brown, Goliath-like wings. I would choose E. I like the idea of being eternally young. I would goe for a green skin look, with red hair. Not all over my body though. More like on my shins, forearms and head. I would have a kind of snout, not like a dog, but sort of like a dragon. Sharp fangs and calws, five fingers of course. The magic is a definate plus. I, personally would go for elimental magic, fire, ice, electricity, wind, plus a bit of telekinesis.

If I had to make another choice, I would definately go for a Mutate werewolf. Brown fur and yellow eyes. Cool huh.

Hey, hiya Marlos! Just browsing your page, and how could I resist this? ;P I'm a Gargoyles fan too!

Which would you choose?

a) the battlesuit
Hmmm....as tempting as this sounds (it sounds like something out of the Star Wars universe, and I'm a fan =P), and though it does have it's advantages over the other choices, what if someone else managed to get their hands on it, or you needed it and you left it at home?

b) the cyberware
No thanks....I like my limbs the way they are. And repairs would just be a pain in the neck.

c) genetic manipulation
Again, very tempting, being a fur and all....but one major downside, you'd be ridden with what would normally be a wild animal only diseases, and who would want fleas?

d) to go gargoyle
This is the one for me, with genetic manipulation as a second choice. Definitely has its advantages. The stone sleep would heal any wounds, definitely a good thing....I could always find a nice safe place to sleep during the day. And the additional strength would be a plus. Best of all, flight (err...gliding). As for what I'd look like.....it would be me turned gargoyle, so some of what I look like I can't change in the process....

I'd have brown hair, blue eyes (can't change that). My wings would be bat-like, like Goliath's, with one "hook" on the wing, so I could fold my wings as a cape. Hmm...I don't know what colour my skin would be, but either greyish like Goliath's, or blueish like Demona's....or maybe a sort of blue-purple, light in colour anyway. I'd want horns like Brooklyn's. I'd be tall and slender (which I am anyway), but I'd want to be able to ditch my glasses, no use flying over the city, and having your glasses fall off so ya can't see =P I'd have the typical gargoyle tail, and my face would be like most gargoyle females, sort of human looking, but not quite because of the ridges over the eyes. I guess I'd better shut up huh? Isn't my fault, I've got a wild imagination (comes from being an artist ;P)!

ah...something else! I'd go part gargoyle/mutate/human! I'd look like a black cat mutate, but have Brooklyn's wings, none of that turning to stone. And the only human part would be that I'd have all five fingers still! (can't type with only four!)

Wanna see what i'd look like, go here.

Cat (for I am...)

Marlos: That'd make you a mutate with fancy wings. :P Mutates have 5 fingers normally.

Hi, my name is Marco, I'm 23, I am a student (engineering) and I'm writing from Italy (maybe you are not interested, but Mama always says it is good manners to introduce myself with unknown people...).
I go to the point: I choose A),I mean the battlesuit (more like Dingo than Xanatos). Ask why?
1) I'd like to be friend with a gargoyle, but I'm human and I don't think changing it is a wise thing-not when I have other choices.
2) Battlesuits can match the performances of all others improvements (strength, speed, flight, stamina, etc...) without the respective disadvantages (stone sleep, EM vulnerability, etc...)
3) Battlesuits can be easily repaired, modified to match nearly any situation by adding dedicated devices (i.e. thermal exchangers to operate in hot environments or iron-bulleted MG to fight the Unseelie) or even upgraded, needing no surgical interventions and with a chance to restore the former setup in case of mistakes (try to do it with a genetical manipulation!!)
4) If I want, I can drop my battlesuit, hide it somewhere (possibly in plain sight) and move as a normal human.

About the other choices?
Cyborg: Ugh, no thanks!
Gargoyle: Mmmmm, I'd like it but... well, I don't like that stone-sleep-stuff... and, most importantly, if I become a gargoyle, I'd probably fall in love with Sata (Hey, I'm quite concerned in that gal already; well I'm very interested in martial arts and a female samurai gargoyle is the best for me) (I'm quite crazy, I know) and this will cause a bit attriction between me and Brooklyn (I can't fight HIM... he's my preferred character).
Mutate: Well, I can consider it.. but not that half-feline-bat-wings-lightning-bolt stuff... all I want is a healing factor, enhanced strength and speed, superhuman wits, adamantium bones and three retractable 30-cm long adamantium claws for each hand ("I'm the best at what I do, bub" SNIKT!!).

My own armor?
Well, its design should be focused in order on:
1)speed
2)firepower
3)stealth & sensors

My suit'd be styled in a very techincal way, with a style similar to the Marine unit of "Starcraft", but far less bulky; it'd be painted in a dull black, making it more difficult to detect by sight, specially at night (if possible, a mimetic pattern-based self-altering system would suit well my specifications).
Of course I want it to be able to fly, with retractable wings made of flexible plastic (like a hand-glider) and reactors, used also to slide over the terrain. My suit'd be able even to glide, for coming unheard. To allow this, the armor has to be as lightweight as possible (a light composite armor, I think, just a little thinner on chest and forearms).
Weaponry: a big automatic energy (laser or particle beams) rifle in the right hand, with a hold on the forearm to use it with a single hand and customizable energy level, to hit without killing if possible; a grenade-launcher bazooka, carried on the back and taken in position over the left shoulder to shoot, with variable ammo (smoke, tear gas, napalm, explosive, armor-piercing, etc...) and a very accurate long-range targeting system (for sniper attack); then a 60-cm-long retractable sharp blade on each arm, for hand-to-hand fighting and a tazer to stun or disable robots and cyborgs; in the helmet, a full line of sensor systems (thermo-scan, radar, enhanced star-light vision, zoom, etc) and a targeting system. Of course, my suit will be needed to enhance my strength, to allow me to carry all this stuff: I think a 50-60% of improvement to be enough.
Well... I think it's enough (sure I forgot something, oh well)

(Whoa, I just didn't realize how I have written... feel free to cut as you like)
(I apologize for probable mistakes in my letter, but I'm far more used in reading English than writing)
Bye,

Marlos: That's certainly the most complete tech-specs we've gotten for a battlesuit yet. That's what I get for asking an engineer. :)

I would have to choose beng a gargoyle. The beauty of flight and strength 10 fold human born. True stone when rays of dawn are nigh but you could miss school. (SWEET)
