Caracals

Caracal (Caracal caracal): Caracals are native to a wide territory throughout Africa and South Western Asia. They are typically 0.6 to 0.9 meters in body length with 18 cm tails. The caracal is smaller than the lynx, with a long slender body, slim legs, and a tail that tapers sharply at the tip. The fur is dense, but relatively short, with various tints of rust and browns, though black caracals have been found. The black, pointed ears are black on the outside and are adorned with long (4.5 cm) black tufts.
The caracal is reknown for being an expert hunter of birds. The swift agility of this cat allows it to strike down birds as they rise to flight, often even catching and subduing three or four before the flock can fly off. Once kept as pets, trained caracals would be competed (with considerable wagers) to see how many tame pigeons they could disable when released before the birds fluttered out of reach. Numbers of ten or a dozen birds were usually struck down.
