Bobcats
Bobcat (Felis [Lynx] rufus): The bobcat, while being similar to the Canadian lynx and sharing some of its territory, the two species are only distantly related. The bobcat is distributed throughout the United States, north to the Canadian border, crossing into British Columbia in the west and Nova Scotia in the east, and south into Mexico. Due to loss of habitat, it is much more rarely seen in the eastern areas of North America.
In average size, the bobcat is smaller than the Canadian lynx. The legs are more slender, the feet smaller, and the ears less conspicuously tufted, sometimes not at all tufted. The coat is less long, of various shades of buff and brown, spotted and lined with black and brownish black, and streaked black on the crown. The backs of the ears are heavily marked with black. The short tail is tipped black only on the upper side.
Shoulder height is 45 to 58 cm (avg 21 in.); head and body length, 65 to 105 cm (avg 33 in.); tail, 11 to 19 cm (avg 6 in.). Weight is up to 14 kg (32 lbs). Bobcats from different regions vary considerably in size, though.
